Rachel Gourley was born in Yorkshire, England and received her education at the Slade School of Fine Art, University College, London and King’s College, Newcastle-on-Tyne, where she earned a diploma of education.
Immigrating to Canada in 1966, she became a Canadian citizen in 1969. She taught high school art in London and Montreal, then worked as a scientific illustrator in Vancouver and Oxford.
Her friendships with Geneva Jackson and her uncle A.Y. Jackson influenced the development of Gourley’s preoccupation with landscape.
She began to use silkscreen as a technique in 1979 and in 1985 she started working at the Malaspina Printmaking Society workshop in Vancouver, where she has benefited from the stimulation and friendship of other artists. Recently she has begun to experiment with monoprints and watercolour paintings.
