Sharon Norman lives and works in Vancouver. She exhibits her paintings in Vancouver, Victoria, Edmonton, Ottawa and Toronto, as well as in Perth, Australia, Auckland, New Zealand, and Reykjavik, Iceland. Her work is represented in numerous private and corporate collections.

Her paintings are painterly works with her photographic images superimposed onto the canvas by colour copy transference. The colour transfers are just the beginning of the painting and do have a strong influence on the mood and colours that dominate.

Norman is greatly influenced by the light and atmosphere of the environment in which she paints because to her, light is of prime importance in her work. All of this brings an aspect of spirituality to her work. She describes her work as abstracts under the influence of the landscape, the environment and the world.

Sharon Norman has a diploma in Art History from the University of British Columbia and has studied art at Emily Carr College of Art and Design, the Ontario College of Art, and the University of Manitoba.  In 2001, Sharon Norman was an artist in residence at the Banff Centre for the Arts.

“My own photographic imagery is chosen with the intent of using them in paintings.  Colour, shape, beauty and contrast of the subject dictate the direction of each painting and are viewed with an eye to how it will be placed on the canvas.  Rather than being a photographer who paints, however, photography is a tool upon which I build my paintings.  Photography is as integral to the work as gesso or pigment or brushwork and ultimately, the final work is all about paint.  The paint allows me to make seamless transitions between image constructing to deconstructing the sense of reality with paint, to enliven our vision.”
